veganism in Roma

It seems that the rest of the world is quite vegan friendly compared to Roma. It's not only pretty difficult to find (expensive) vegan friendly food at stores but it's almost impossible to eat a fast meal while you are out of home. This I think mainly happens because Italian tradition it's meat-y, fish-y, dair-y and egg-y.

Breakfast "out" means cappuccino (milk) and cornetto (croissant, baked with eggs and maybe some milk..ofter filled with dairy custard).

A snack may be a tramezzino which is white, soft bread (not the Italian average bread, but maybe the average American one) having often lard as a shortening in the dough and filled with regular mayo and either meat/fish + veggies or cheese/eggs + veggies (or eggs + meat, argh.). Another snack may be a "regular" sandwich, but vegetarian fillings consist of mayo, mozzarella cheese and tomato or salad. Probably asking for a vegan sandwich will take the cafeteria owner fall in despair and serve you bread filled with salad.

Italians seem to forget that cheese comes from animals and that salami, ham and sausages were actually animals. Once I went to a restaurant and I told the nice lady cooking for us that I couldn't eat any meat or fish. She took me food with ham in it asking: "you can't eat meat but you can have ham, don't you?"

So the choices to eat some vegan food may be Chinese or Indian restaurants (in both cultures there is vegetarianism for religious reasons so they do fully understand what NO ANIMALS IN MY FOOD mean), Ikea which always offers one or two cruelty free alternatives, falafel sandwich at mid-eastern kebab shops or "restaurants" in squat-centers that almost always offer delicious vegan (and often organic/fair trade) meals.

BUT. Today a found out that there is a Sicilian fast food chain in Rome called Mondo Arancina that surprisingly offers TWO esplicitly vegan arancini (you read it more ore less arancheenee). For those who don't know what arancini are you can read it on wikipedia, but differently from what they state, arancini are way larger than northern (and more popular in Rome) supplì.

Actually it is a huge ball of fried rice, so not exactly a diet/healthy meal (nor one you wish to eat everyday, being really greasy) but is in fact a cheap way to have vegan food in Rome, so keep it on mind if you'll ever come over.

On their website they show just two addresses (the one close to piazza del Popolo and the one not so far from Saint Peter's basilica) but they have a third one in via Oderisi da Gubbio.

These ones were my vegan arancini:

Panarea, filled with vegetables (carrots, zucchini and mushrooms)

Very similar to Spanish cuisine! Those Panarea look scrummy though.

yes, I think Sicily has been influenced by Spanish domination :)

All about... (vegan) food ha detto...

I heard a lot about Mondo Arancina from my vegan friends from Rome and I want to come back to the city to go there and also another restaurant (that I forgot the name now, but I didn't go yet).

Oh my! Vegan arancini! I spent four months in lovely Roma as a student, before I was vegan. My favorite thing to eat was suppli al telephono from a place called Cose Fritte. It's nice to know there is something similar and vegan for when I eventually go back to Roma for a visit!
